ALS expands environmental testing services geography

ALS Limited is pleased to announce that it has acquired Severn Trent Analytical Services (STL) from the UK-listed water utilities group, Severn Trent plc.

The STL business has a turnover of over £15m and operates from two main laboratories – in Wakefield and Coventry – as well as a satellite laboratory in Runcorn and a logistics centre in Ireland. STL employs over 300 staff and has a leading market position in providing analytical services to water authorities in the UK.

Greg Kilmister, ALS Limited’s Managing Director commented:
“The acquisition of STL gives ALS access to the general UK environmental market and complements our highly successful environmental business in mainland Europe. STL has a strong technical reputation and offers a full range of microbiological and analytical services to its customers. By combining STL’s people and assets with ALS’s proven business model, we are confident that we will see its operations improve significantly over the coming year. The acquisition of STL increases ALS total workforce in the UK and Ireland to 870 and reinforces the importance of the region to the company.”

STL – which will trade as ‘ALS Environmental’ with immediate effect - will be headed up by Rickard Hernell, ALS’s European Operations Director, and overseen by Mark Wood, Managing Director for ALS’s Food and Pharmaceutical operation in the UK.

Mark Wood adds:
“We have been delighted by the support that ALS have given us following their acquisition of Eclipse Scientific Group last year and we will use this experience in helping to quickly integrate STL into the ALS family. STL offers us an exciting opportunity to establish a strong environmental platform in parallel to our growing food and pharmaceutical business and to further develop ALS’s Life Sciences division in the UK and Ireland”.
